Dance Workshops

We were able to offer our students a fantastic opportunity to dance with Sam Woods. A professional dancer and past pupil of Direct Dance Company who performed in this years panto, at the Theatre Royal Norwich.

We would like to say thank-you to Sam for a fantastic day of dance on Sunday 8th January. Our pupils had a fabulous time, learning your routines and would like to know when you can come again.

Here’s a little snippet of our show 2019……

Direct Dance Company is run by principals Julie Gibbon and Debbie Hawkins, qualified dance teachers affiliated to the United Teachers Of Dance. The school was founded in 1990 and has grown from strength to strength to over 200 pupils in 30 years.

We provide dance classes for all ages from 3 years old to Adult in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, and Acrobatics. We also teach Junior and Senior Acrobatic Workshops once a month and all are welcome.

Students are encouraged to develop at their own pace, improving technique, strength, flexibility and co ordination in a relaxed, safe and supportive environment, to give them confidence that will carry them through all walks of life.

We pride ourselves on being a welcoming, happy school and most of all A SCHOOL FOR ALL.

Julie and Debbie

Principals

Julie took her first tentative steps at the tender age of 2 1/2 when her mother took her to the local dance school and she discovered her love of dance. In her teenage years she assisted her dance teacher with younger pupils and found that she had a natural flare and passion to teach. After taking her teachers exam and moving to Norwich, Julie’s job as a Nanny meant that her knowledge and love of dance was discovered by pre-school parents and she saw the opportunity to start a class. Having known Debbie from her Dance School years, Julie got in touch and one class became two – Direct Dance Company was born. Julie’s unique way of teaching brings fun and happiness to her classes. She says that watching her students grow in confidence is the best feeling in the world.

Debbie’s love of dance started at the age of 5. She attended her local dance school for 25 years taking grades and gaining major examinations and medals along with awards in Ballet, Tap, Modern and Acrobatics with the United Teachers Of Dance Association. Debbie performed in bi-annual shows in local theatres, Theatre Royal Norwich, various fetes and cabaret shows. She furthered her training and qualified as a teacher in the different dance genres, assisting and then teaching with the school.  Alongside her love for teaching, Debbie danced professionally on cruise ships and, more locally, in 3 summer seasons and panto. Debbie has an infinite passion for both teaching and choreography and loves to pass this onto her pupils.

Hannah

Dance Teacher

I started dancing quite late on when I was 12 years old. I had never danced before I started at Direct Dance and I have not looked back since. Over the years I have had many opportunities and experiences which include: Direct Dance biennial Shows, Her Majesties Theatre-London, Britannia Pier -British Heart Foundation, Theatre Royal Norwich – UTD Shows, Workshops with Westend professionals, Dance Competitions, Fetes, Cabaret Performances, Fundraisers.

I have always liked to push myself and being able to take part in exams and medals is something I enjoy. I have taken exams in all the disciplines offered and am on Level 6 in Acro and Tap and taken my major exams in Modern and Ballet (I’m on Intermediate and Advanced respectively). Along with my personal exams I have taken part of my teachers’ exam in Ballet and qualified to teach to Level 3.

When you join Direct Dance it is like joining a family. Julie and Debbie are supportive, caring and want young and old to enjoy dancing as much as they do.

Annie

Assistant Dance Teacher

I joined Direct Dance when I was 3. My parents were desperate to find an expressive outlet for the crazy, hyperactive child they had on their hands. I wasn’t a natural dancer; I lacked focus and all I wanted to do was flying angels and handstands. Julie and Debbie helped me gain confidence and improve my technique and I decided to become the best dancer I could be.

I have completed UTD exams and performed in the bi-annual dance shows which are always a highlight for me; we all come together, see what other classes have been working on and show off our own skills. I have also taken part in classes and workshops held by Dance East and competed in dance competitions reaching the national stage in 2016, 2017, 2018.

I have been helping in the younger classes for 6 years and have developed my choreography skills, learning from Debbie and Julie. Now, each week I teach a variety of classes with different dances and new ideas.

Ellie

Assistant Dance Teacher

I started dancing with Julie and Debbie when I was 6 years old and have never looked back. Starting with dancing every Saturday, I joined Debbie’s Friday ballet classes and, more recently, the Thursday Senior Classes and Senior Acro workshops. These are great way to keep fit, to push myself to be the best dancer I can be as well as a chance to dance as much as possible. I have danced in every Direct Dance show since 2001, and with Direct Dance in the United Teachers of Dance shows at Norwich Theatre Royal, fetes, and external dance workshops. I have worked through my medals, focussing more on ballet in recent years achieving honours in my Intermediate Module 1 Major Ballet Exam!

My passion for dance inspired my passion to choreograph. I always loved making up routines when I was young, and for the last few years I have assisted with choreography for the younger pupils for the biannual show. I truly love seeing them bring my choreography to life. Teaching adds a level of passion for dance as it brings pride and enthusiasm in sharing your passion with a younger generation and bringing out their individual personalities through dance.

What our students and parents say

Direct Dance has given me so much more than just the ability to express myself through dance. It is a second home, a place to feel appreciated and cherished. I have gained a second family who are not only my dance partners but my biggest cheerleaders in life. There are times when I don’t know what I would’ve done without dance as an outlet and I am so grateful that 15 years ago my mum walked me into Miss Julie’s saturday beginner class for good toes and naughty toes. I owe so much to Direct Dance for helping me to blossom into the young woman I am today.

To to anyone considering joining, it will be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make for yourself or your child.

My son and daughter thoroughly enjoy their sessions at Direct Dance. Julie and Debbie are always smiling and happy, and their energy and enthusiasm for dance rubs off onto their students. We really appreciate their open, fun approach to teaching and their willingness and skill at encouraging pupils whatever their ability.

I will forever be grateful to Direct Dance for providing me with a safe space to learn and grow as a dancer and boosting my confidence throughout my life, as well as introducing me to people who have quickly become some of my closest friends.

Direct Dance is FAB-U-LOUS!

My daughter loves her dance lessons. They are the highlight of her week. She enjoys the diverse mix of modern, tap, ballet and acro, and feels nurtured and safe. There is a genuine atmosphere of fun and inclusiveness; for all shapes, sizes and abilities!

Direct Dance is so much more than just an A-MAZ-ING successful dance company, it is also like a second home for my daughter.

Thank you Julie and Debbie for bringing so much joy into our world.
